The Open Office / Office Libre "font embedding" saga.

This is a work in progress.

Send this webpage link to your friends.

Because this clandestine banning of the embedding of ones own fonts in ones own documents - for the last 20 years by the Libre Office Committee* has to stop.
*(formerly Open Office)

The Prelude:

An after thought as an introduction:

It occurred to me that while there is this whole groundswell against ethically shitty companies - such as Microsoft and their bad software and product lock in, licensing, and the never ending upgrade cycle - Microsoft's cash cow.

After a couple of decades of vicious infighting with Microsoft and their dropping me deeply into the shit with their crap products - I agree with that - I just refuse to entertain Microsoft (period) - and I am happy to help or support anyone or anything that slams torpedoes into the guts of that bloated behemoth, or white ants it's income streams or product sales or anything - just to gnaw ceaselessly at it's foundations.

In a technical sense, MS Word got to be about as good as it got in 2003 - and since then the only thing MS has done is stick the same gear in different wrapping paper and called it an upgrade.

Most people call it bullshit and regard the improvements as dumb ideas - someone even passed thier Office 2007 CD;s and it only took a few days of determined evaluation - and the inability to get rid of the ribbon and to get back to standard menus and a bunch of really shitty defects made Microsoft Office 2007 bin worthy.

I would not like to see Microsoft actually go out of business -well yes I would - but I'd like to see it crippled to the extent that as another corrupt US Empirical Corporate Entity, it gets a damned good kicking into the corner to slowly fizzle into partial oblivion where shithead corrupt management and piss poor product makers deserve to be placed.

But it also is also a matter of concern that the Open Office and now Office Libre committees - who do hold meetings in secret - are actually into the zealotry of the forced exclusion of anyone using the fonts that they want, in the documents that they themselves create - from their own licensed / free / self made fonts.

Office Libre formerly Open Office - is run by people with a hidden agenda - they have always stopped, and will do what ever it takes to stop you, from embedding your own fonts in your own documents. And it's always been that way.

It's the long standing secret agenda - that is no longer a secret.

Back to my original article.

Some lessons in CORPORATE ETHICS:

Dr. Deming - The 5 Deadly Diseases 1984

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehMAwIHGN0Y

First off this is a little bit of a mix up - partly due to the length of time that it has been running some 5 or 8 years or something- and some changes that I may or may not be aware of and similar things.

And there are players coming onto the scene and off the scene and all - since I am not willing to double check every fucking detail again and again - I will just stick to the one point.

The people who have the say so, on Open Office - and now Libre Office - have the game rigged to stop you from embedding your own fonts in your own documents.

Whatever commercial licensing, limitations, or not that may exist in the use of specific fonts by specific people / manufacturers etc - are the arrangements that IF necessary for commercial uses etc., - are between the user and the font maker - and it's NONE of the business of the folks in Open Office or Libre Office to start telling you what to do by stopping you from using any of the fonts that you have in your own stockpile.

What font embedding means is that when you make a document or artwork (i.e. graphics and text) using the generally very excellent software* and you save it with font embedding, it means that when you move the document to another computer it opens WITH THOSE FONTS in the document.

However if the fonts used in the document are NOT embedded, and you move that document to another computer without the same fonts in it, as in the document, the computer will substitute other fonts from the other computers font sets.

This will generally speaking - completely fuck your documents up - the layout, the formatting and the printing - everything.

This is not a trivial issue that can be swept under the carpet - hence my full on infighting with the dumb fuck moderators and the committees etc., in Open Office - when it was under Sun Microsystems, then Oracle - and then when it split off into Libre Office - while the remainders of Open Office were handed over to Apache - after the idiots in Oracle fucked up the attempted commercialisation and sticking people over barrels to make them pay for what they - the world community had in large part produced.

*(I use Libre Office Draw a lot - and it is SERIOUSLY brilliant /art / 2D CAD / and it's encroaching into being nearly AutoCAD engineering - and the rest is looking SERIOUSLY impressive)

So to the fleshing out of the Fakts.

The folks in Open Office - formerly Sun Microsystems - and now Oracle..

And the fork (split off) from the corporate supported bullshit trip to the committee based bullshit trip - Office Libre..

For the case that follows, I shall simply use the term "Open Office", it's a generic term that covers both bases, or OO or LO if  I need to be specific.

My main fight with the formerly Open Office and now Libre Office is a long standing - and it concerns THEM stopping YOU (and ME) from embedding your own fonts in your own documents.

In the Beginning.

Open Office has been in development for 20 years... and they still do not have font embedding.

And yet ALL of the following products HAVE font embedding.

Even Bumfuck Nowhere products like Abiword etc. has font embedding.

Microsoft Office,

Word Perfect,

Adobe Acrobat,

FreeType,

Abiword,

Koffice,

Gnumeric,

Scribus,

Inkscape,

GIMP,

LaTex,

etc.

Some of them have had FONT EMBEDDING for DECADES.

And yet Open Office and now Libre Office - they are like the well heeled and wealthy saying they can't get it together to get an envelope, a stamp and write a one paragraph letter - while the homeless bums, eating from bins and drinking cheap shit wine - all have mobile phones.

This is what bullshit artists these committees have become.

What goes on with fonts:

Some fonts are free, some fonts have free use of except for commercial uses, and some are licensed users only.

You see the people who run Microsoft, handle the issue of font embedding like this with their generic say so:

MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LICENSE TERMS WINDOWS 7 PROFESSIONAL
These license terms are an agreement between Microsoft Corporation

3. ADDITIONAL LICENSING REQUIREMENTS AND/OR USE RIGHTS.

b. Font Components.
While the software is running, you may use its fonts to display and print content. You may only

· embed fonts in content as permitted by the embedding restrictions in the fonts; and

· temporarily download them to a printer or other output device to print content.

I tried to find the Word Perfect write up on font embedding and licensing - while the software USED to be the best in the world. I know - I had the 23 floppy disk set of them nearly 20 years ago.

But as a corporation, they developed an arse about approach to doing simple things, and they have slid off the radar into obscurity and not much can be found of anything anywhere - even about their own products, via a search on their own website - which is fucking crap.

So here is the reference to the fact that you CAN infact embed your fonts into your word perfect documents - via another source.

WordPerfect 12 For Dummies

www.uop.edu.jo/e.../WordPerfect%2012/WordPerfect%201200127.pdf

"Fortunately, WordPerfect enables you to embed fonts in the document itself so that whatever machine opens up the document can view it using the fonts (in the original document) ..."

Adobe - who I hate because they are thieving lying cunts - just like Microsoft - they are right into regionalised price gouging - charging ENORMOUS amounts more for their software (RIPPING PEOPLE OFF), for people OUTSIDE of the USA.... and even with denominational parity with the US dollar - they are dumb enough to say the mark up from $2400 in the US to say $3800 to people outside the US - is because of distribution costs - and this racketeering is aimed at people who are downloading it - outside of the USA.

So the management of Adobe - like Microsoft - are bullshit artists - hence my support for "vindictive subversion"(c) Me, by making software that does every thing their does and making it free - thus undermining their cash grabbing corruption and deceit. (see previous mention of corporate ethics)

Well they too have FONT EMBEDDING into their PDF's (and I assume all their other products) - and without going into DEEP searches - they had it back in 2005 (and probably way earlier).
Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard

"Embedding fonts ensures that your PDF uses the same fonts as the original document, no matter where you open the PDF or what fonts are installed on that system."

But OPEN OFFICE has been around for 20 years and the people who ran it in Sun Microsystems, Oracle and now Office Libre, did not and still do not, allow you to embed your own fonts in your own documents.

The LACK of font embedding in Open Office has been an OUTSTANDING sore point since people have complained about it in 2002 - 2003 (and probably way before) - and this bullshit from these Open Office committees, forums, supporters etc., etc., etc., has been going on for a long time for example:

And here are a heap of DUPLICATES of the same ISSUE,
on the same web site!!!!

Issue 9953 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.
Issue 15611 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.
Issue 31387 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.
Issue 47234 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.

Issue 45106 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.
Issue 45457 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.
Issue 23732 has been marked as a duplicate of this issue.

Apache has taken over the "Open Office" after Oracle fucked it right up by being hamfisted $$$ arseholes and almost everyone bailed out and started up Libre Office.

So the issue 20370 is ongoing at the Apache site - and they appear to be doing something about it.

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=20370

In reference to what remains of Open Office remember the term B.A. or Before Apache - because there are now some developments going on there - whereas in the 20 years Before Apache - there was no font embedding.

The designers of Open Office (Open Office B.A.) and now Libre Office, also stop you from modifying the program to embed the fonts that you want to use in your documents.

It's not that it can't be done, fuck even I can do it but I have too many other things and while it is easy to do, it will require the time that I don't have and I think it's time to blow the whistle on these arseholes and their bullshit.

I am not THE original or the earliest to raise the issue in the forums etc.,  - but I have been landing my punches for 8 years or 9 years... maybe more... and more so than any specific individual - because I hate dumb fucks like the B.A. Open Office forum moderators and I hate game playing arseholes - and SOME of the Open Office crowd most of whom took off to make up the Libre Office crowd - are right into this bullshit.

The people in Open Office, Ubuntu, Bugzilla, Launchpad, etc., etc., etc., and all their FORUMS - WHEN YOU PUSH THE ISSUE OF FONT EMBEDDING - they close the issue down, no matter who raised it, no matter what and irrespective of the GOOD REASONS or needs for font embedding.

This is how the "circular loop of logic" operates.

"Oh it's not a Ubuntu problem - it's an Open Office problem" (close thread) -
"Oh it's not an Open Office Problem, it's a Ubuntu problem" (close thread).
"The issue has no merrit" (Open Office / Libre Office)   (close thread).
"The issue is a dulicate of XXXX  (Open Office / Libre Office)   (close thread).

When I say "arseholes" and "open office and now Libre Office" - I don't mean everyone - no, there are lots of good hard working people on these projects - though I have my suspicions that they may go the way of Netscape, then Mozilla and then the $$$$ not for profit Mo$illa Foundation who takes nearly $100 million or so in revenue at last count - and the gravy train riders who jostled for position to get in on that scam .

When I say "arseholes" and "open office" - I do mean the forum moderators, the committee members and the "management" who actively panhandle the bullshit and collude to close down the issues of EMBEDDING fonts - one after the other, or brush them off and ignore them.

The Open Office (B.A.) and Libre Office, committees, forums, moderators - in either camp - they refuse to deal with any of these issues - they just get into bullshitting and buck passing - and after stringing people along, they silence people by closing the thread down, or marking it as solved, duplicate of, etc.

And this is how these moderators do it"

------- Comment #23 From st@openoffice.org 2010-01-05 15:35:55 ------- Thanks for the valuable additional input on font embedding. It will be considered if the original issue 20370 should find attention again. Please accept that this issue is closed as duplicate and refrain from further activities outside of our guidelines that are available at http://qa.openoffice.org/issue_handling/pre_submission.html *** This issue has been marked as a duplicate of 20370 ***

------- Comment #24 From st@openoffice.org 2010-01-05 15:37:47 ------- closing issue as duplicate.

See what happens with these arsehole moderators - is that LOTS of people raise the same issue - they do NOTHING about the first time it's raised (way back in 2003 or earlier), they do NOTHING about all the other times it's raised.

And then they shut all the other threads down, by saying they are duplicates of an earlier and similar issue.

And no matter HOW MANY VOTES the issues get....

They do fucking nothing.

These arseholes - and they are fucking arseholes - they have had from 2003 and probably way before - until 2011 - that is 8 years going on 9 years - and they have done fucking nothing.

This is the HIDDEN agenda in Open Office and Libre Office committees.

People can spend HOURS raising issues, negotiating, putting forward reasons why it has to be done, citing examples etc... and all these usless cunts of forum moderators do, is play god, fuck you around, drag the issue out and waste everyones time - and then close the forum issue on them.

"Hellooooo - there is ONE good reason why font embedding is included as a functional process in every other office suit and program -

In the World

It's because people need it -
You dumb fuck forum moderators

While the folks in Open Office and Libre Office say this on their site - their bullshit is contrasted and highlighted with my counter points:

http://why.openoffice.org/

Enterprises from corner-shops to corporate giants are turning to OpenOffice.org 3 to power their businesses. The flexible word processor, powerful spreadsheet, dynamic graphics, database access and more meet all the requirements for an office software package.

A completely open development process means that anyone can report bugs, request new features, or enhance the software.

The result: OpenOffice.org 3 does everything you want your office software to do, the way you want it to.

Open Office does not embed the fonts. It does not meet the needs of a modern office software package - because it does not SAVE the work with the fonts that you want to use in the documents that you create.

You can't enhance the software to make it do this, and it doesn't do what you want it to... which is to embed the fonts that you want to use in your own documents.

The documents that you create with your own fonts, cannot be saved, transmitted, reproduced, are not of an archival quality - take them off the PC they were created on and you have nothing but E-Shit.

http://why.openoffice.org/why_gov.html

Data is safe.

Freedom of Information Acts require that the documents you create today will be accessible years in the future.

The documents that you create WILL NOT BE accessible in years to come.

If the fonts are not embedded at the time of production, then they sure as shit are not going to be there when you do reopen them many years into the future.

 http://why.openoffice.org/why_sme.html

The no-hassle answer For small businesses, IT is a hassle and an expense. OpenOffice.org 3 is simply the easiest and cheapest way of providing the essential software tools required to support a growing business.

Developed over twenty years, OpenOffice.org is a mature, stable, product, guaranteeing trouble-free usage. Behind the scenes, it stores all your valuable data in a format approved by the International Organization for Standardization - the first software package in the world to meet this exacting standard.

As more companies adopt the standard, exchanging data between office software will become as easy as saving and opening a file - a system integrator's dream.

"Open Office" DOES NOT store ALL of your DATA... and

You CANNOT freely exchange, save and open the Open Office files, or export as a Microsoft, Word Perfect or any other format Document or a PDF - because the FONTS, THAT YOU WANT TO USE IN THEM, which ARE the actual FORMATTING AND LAYOUT - are not embedded either.

And with 20 years of development - the DUMB FUCKS who rubber stamp it - don't have font embedding and they stop you from doing it yourself.

Meanwhile EVERY OTHER PROGRAM has font embedding - and

While I don't know all the details of the ISO standard in regards to this, putting out software that is NOT of an archival standard or quality - because the font's cannot be embedded; and

It's TOTALLY INCOMPATIBLE with all other formats, in regards to IMPORTING and EXPORTING documents - because the font's cannot be saved in the imported document or exported into other document format - the formats like MS Word or Word Perfect - that do font embedding.

I think that the so called compliance of Open Office and now Libre Office with the ISO standard
is fucking bullshit.

http://why.openoffice.org/why_oem.html

Open for business OpenOffice.org 3 prides itself on its compatibility with other office software, both in the way it works and in the files it uses.

So offering OpenOffice.org 3 doesn't close off options for your clients - in fact, it opens up new opportunities for them

The lack of FONT embedding closes off a LOT of options for your clients.

It's NOT compatible with other office software, it cannot be exported as any other format - with the fonts included as embedded into those formats.

And it cannot import those documents AND embed the fonts into the Open Office or Libre Office documents, and print them just like the native applications they took the documents from.

In fact not only will OPEN OFFICE close off a LOT of options,

Using Open Office and now Libre Office - will completely FUCK and RUIN

Your clients documents entirely.

Well this "FREE TO ALL" "Open to ALL" "No HASSLES" Software write up is all PR spin and bullshit.

"Hello"
THERE IS NO FONT EMBEDDING
IN OPEN OFFICE

Although it's repeatedly implied that your fonts ARE embedded - they are not.

The refusal to embed fonts and stopping people from embedding their own is NOT advertised;

And it's a HUGE fuck you for doing this.

And it's a HUGE fuck you to Sun Microsystems, Oracle, the Open Office and Office Libre committees for failing to do anything about it.

This KNOWN PROBLEM been going on, without ANY RESOLUTION for a LONG time.

Meanwhile the BULLSHIT ARTISTS in the PR departments keep right on saying this "miracle office software for everyone, everywhere" crap, which is not true.

And to crack a nut here -  While they - the
Open Office crowds SAY this:

http://why.openoffice.org/

A completely open development process means that anyone can report bugs, request new features, or enhance the software.

It's true IF you have a brain, and the time and at least some suck it and see programming skills. Back up the program, do searches, make changes, see if they work etc., in an analytical kind of way..

But if you DID do it - would that committee (Libre Office) implement the changes into the next release - given how all of them have collectively acted for the last 20 fucking years - I'd say no...

But if you don't have the time to do all the analytical work to make the changes - would the Libre Office "collective" implement font embedding themselves - Not a fucking chance.

They have had 20 years as the core of the Open Office collective and after that fucked up when Oracle bought it off Sun Microsystems - and they all fled and created the Open Document Foundation and Libre Office - nothing changed and as far as implementing "Font Embedding" - the bullshit has kept right on going.

It's been my experience that Open Office and now Libre Office has fairly distinct levels of or "tiers of control"; over

a) what gets done; and
b) who gets to do it; and
c) what is allowed or not allowed to be done

So we have the peasants fighting it out in the forums with the dead shit moderators, then we have the "Mysterious Developers" and then we have the "Committees of Management".

Because these organisations being what they are, who they are composed of and who gets what done - well it comes down to this:

"Open Office" (B.A.) and now Libre Office - the people in the organisation's who "put out" the program, and determine it's content or function ranges do this:

1. They put out the program WITHOUT font embedding.

2. They do not tell you this is what they have done.

3. They refuse to put it in when you do ask.

4. They refuse to tell you how to "switch font embedding on" or "how to switch the restriction off", what the code is and where it's located; and

5. The moderators in the forums continue to play god and shut down ALL discussion of the subject. (mostly because they are dumb fucking arseholes)

And you have no equal say so or ability to stop these moderators from shutting down your thread in the forums - or to make it get pushed forward and to get it implemented - it's a catch 22 situation - your supposed to get it implemented via the forums and the moderators are game playing dumb cunts on power trips who shit the topic down and refuse to advance it - so what then?
You get people like me, who call these arseholes on their bullshit - that is what happens.

This is why people are saying, "Fuck these restrictions and impediments to my productivity" and they get sick of being jerked off by game playing people who bullshit them -And they go back to using Microsoft Office

So why is FONT EMBEDDING so important,
to EVERYONE concerned?

A document IS it's format - and the FONT is both the formatting of the document or artwork, it is THE LAYOUT, and it is the information that is being conveyed in this format - both artistically and contextually.

A document - be it text or graphics with text, is a CREATED work. It's substance is to convey information, meaning and utility.

The font types, sizes, margins, headers and footers, line spacing, letter and word spacing - are all combined - sometimes in a very sophisticated way - as a series of interrelated fixtures.

And the BASIS or structure of the document or graphic IS it's fonts, the type, size, spacing and location.

It's like this image - it's composed of words, letters, graphics, styles, sizes, location, colours,  language etc., etc., etc.. they ALL combine in a very specific way to "become the end result".

Imagine replicating this Smiths Speedometer Clock - it's an absolutely lovely instrument, beautiful colours, clear easy to read layout - just fantastic.

Recreate all the artwork - then send that artwork to a screen printers for enameling etc. and they do not have the fonts on their PC or store it away for 5 months and in the mean time, buy a new PC without the font sets - or send the files to your clients - and they don't have the font sets on their PC's......

When it gets opened up again - because of the lack of font embedding, all of the fonts, are substituted with 12 point Arial.

That completely fucks it.

So this is a MAJOR FUCKING PROBLEM - with the whole Open Office Suite.

It goes on with Presentations, Documents, PDF's, Drawings, Imports, Exports etc...

And I and almost all people who use this software - despite it's many praises, it means that the LACK OF this ONE primary function, actually renders the ENTIRE Open Office suite almost WORTHLESS on a personal level and on a business level.

This is how the lack of font embedding affects a document.

When produced - it goes from this on the original computer, with the font sets installed on that computer:

________________________
 (bottom of book page)

To This - on another computer without those font sets - when alternative fonts are substituted:

________________________
 (bottom of book page)

And if your NOT aware of that trap of "SAVE" does not actually mean SAVE because the pricks on these comittee's have a number of different interpretations of the word "save".

Their interpretation of the word "save" means that you must undertake the process of manually BREAKING THE LINKS, on the graphics before you "SAVE" and close the document / drawing etc, because if you do not, then your GRAPHICS will not be saved in the document or drawing either.

So now your epic 1000 page book, that you carefully saved and backed up etc.,  is not actually SAVED - it's saved with plain text.

And if you were not aware of the need to BREAK THE LINKS to all of the source graphics, then all of your graphics have gone too.

ALL of your hard work with the fonts, the formatting and the layout etc.,

It's ALL gone.

Your now the proud owner of a plain text file

BINGO! - the people of Libre Office - have trashed your work

Are you getting the idea that the LACK of font embedding in Open Office and Libre Office is a really fucking significant issue?

And these dumb fucks are playing games to stop you from being able to embed your own fonts in your own documents and graphics?

And to add more fuel to the fire...

photo

The original head trip for Open Office was to circumvent what the FUCK HOLES in Microsoft do with their software - i.e. MS Word (etc.)., and how their business strategy of forcing upgrades by crippling last years crap software impacts upon what you have created 5, 10, 15 or 20 years ago.

Microsoft is NOTORIOUS for the deliberately inbuilt lack of backward compatibility with documents made using earlier versions of Microsoft Word; which means that while YOU have paid Microsoft to work for you, they in fact entrap and lock you into their product line - and what you make with their software is not of an archival standard; and

With Microsoft's licensing fees, product lock in, etc., etc., etc - this adds HUGE costs to personal, office and governmental overheads.

They are also corporate arseholes, hammering people for cash for their software, when they have 1 kerosene lantern and their monthly income is like $5.

So I absolutely support fucking Microsoft over to the Nth degree - kicking it's sleazy management and shitty product makers with their stupid ideas, into the gutter at every opportunity.

Microsoft can count me as an adversarial ex-customer. For sure.

And this is what a pack of arseholes the Open Office and Libre Office people are, with their HALF TRUTH's on the subject of font embedding:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/General/How_can_I_add_fonts_to_OpenOffice%3F

How can I add fonts to OpenOffice?

How can I add fonts to OpenOffice?

OpenOffice.org uses the fonts that are installed in your system. Add new fonts using the Font management tools for your Operating System (for example in Microsoft Windows, you add new fonts via Control Panel > Fonts). You may need to restart OpenOffice.org (including the Quickstarter), to see the new fonts in the Font Name list box.

But while they say you can use any font under the sun in your publications -

What they DON'T say, is that the fonts DO NOT EMBED into the DOCUMENTS, that you create, using the Open Office and now Libre Office Software...

It's called LYING BY OMISSION.

Move the documents from computer A with the font sets, to computer B without the font sets - "VANISH" - there goes your "added fonts".

And this is bullshit too:

http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/features/3.3/

Embedding of Standard PDF Fonts

In previous versions, the standard PDF standard fonts (Times, Helvetica, Courier, Symbol and ZapfDingbats) were only embedded into the resulting PDF when the resulting file was of the PDF/A type, since the PDF/A standards requires this. In version 3.3, you can optionally embed these fonts in all PDF documents created by OpenOffice.org to enhance display accuracy in PDF viewers.

BUT that is NOT ALL THE FONTS.
I think there is only about 14 fonts that embed in the Open Office PDF format.

Guess what happens to the actual fonts that you have been using?

"Disappear!"

And here we have the UGA having a good write up on the subject of how the lack of font embedding fucks your life up - an extract of it:

http://www.grad.uga.edu/academics/thesis/thesis_fonts.html

Embedding Fonts

In order to ensure that the PDF version of your thesis or dissertation looks the same on all machines, you must make sure that your document carries its own copies of the fonts you have used. In technical terms, this is referred to as "embedding" your fonts.

The Problem

If you don't embed your fonts, it is possible that your document will look like gibberish or be missing essential characters when it is opened on a different machine. This usually happens with non-English characters; including Greek mathematical and statistical symbols (alpha, beta, sigma, mu); Asian, Arabic, Hebrew, etc. language fonts; and many WordPerfect fonts.
This has been a source of problems for students requesting bound copies from the Tate Print and Copy center.
grey rule
TOP

Example

Student Joe creates a PDF file on his machine using Greek mathematical symbols (without embedding the fonts). He submits his PDF file to the Graduate School, and the format checkers do not see any problems with it because they have the same fonts installed as he does. Here's how the file looks to him and the format checkers:

However, the print shop may not have the same fonts installed on their machine. Here's how the file looks to them, and how it prints out:

This has resulted in some people accusing the print shop of intentionally destroying their documents. Don't laugh, it's true.

Etc., etc., etc. (it's a good read)

The people in Open Office and now Libre Office - have designed the software to NOT embed your own fonts into the PDF creator as well.

And yet here are the people in Open Office - recommending that Open Office be used in schools by administrations and students - and it fucks up and falls over the first hurdle there.

"Helloooooo lights are on - anyone home?"

So there are enormous amounts of fonts that people can use or have been using and when you switch to Libre Office - these pricks do not allow you to use them in your own documents.

When you raise the issue - they do NOTHING.

They do promote the "free fonts" for their own programs etc., and while those fonts ARE excellent and amazingly great -  It is no good when it comes to using your own fonts - which are the fonts that you actually want to use or that you have been using for ages in your own documents and art work - before switching to Open Office or Libre Office.

AND if you say - like I once did - "I can copy all my old MS Word and Word Perfect documents into the universal, ever lasting, ISO standard, archival quality ODT format with Open office - and I can dump Microsoft for good"

It says so here:

http://why.openoffice.org/why_oem.html

Open for business OpenOffice.org 3 prides itself on its compatibility with other office software, both in the way it works and in the files it uses.

And then this is where these pricks really land you in the shit - because if you go and open all your documents in Open Office and Libre Office and SAVE AS in the ODT format - and then delete all your MS and WP formatted documents - what your left with in Open Office is worthless and seriously fucked up trash that doesn't have the original fonts, layout and art work in it.....

Just how impressed do you think I am finding out that MONTHS of hard work completely turn to shit after the conversions?

It's a good thing I am too smart to take their software on blind faith - I kept the originals and did not allow these pricks to fuck my life and work up.

But I have seen what happens to your own work when you do trust them and they fuck it up on you with their lies and bullshit and their refusal to allow you to embed your own fonts in your own documents - and what that leads too.

To all you people in Open Office and Office Libre that mandate and enforce the inability to embed your own fonts in your own documents, and the refusal to say anything explicitly about it......

A HUGE fuck you;

For all the people you have dropped into the shit, causing them to lose all their work;  and

For not saying anything about lack of font embedding before hand, and for not doing anything about it afterwards.

For the last 20 fucking years.

So if you are pissed off at all the people who do this bullshit and want to lay the issue on the line - of either removing the restriction of NO font embedding or to kick them out of the job, you can contact them here - and say so to their faces.

And this is how they organise their own conferences:

LibreOffice Hackfest 2011 in Munich

From September 2nd to September 4th, the first LibreOffice Hackfest will take place in the City of Munich, Bavaria, Germany. This event is kindly supported by the LiMux migration project of the Bavarian capital city.

Agenda

As the Hackfest is some sort of unconference, there is no fixed agenda with items to be worked on.

So while this team carries on with
"Agendaless some sort of UN-conferences",
- the entire world is of Open Office Users is saying -

"No Font Embedding - What are you people? Fucking stupid?"

EVERYONE ELSE has FONT EMBEDDING
And they have been saying it for the last 20 years.

The ORIGINAL "Open Office" which went from Sun Microsystems and then got taken over by Oracle - who then palmed it off to Apache when their corporate dumbfuckness back fired on them - when "font embedding" is searched for on the old Oracle Open Office Site - this is what comes up:

About 1100 results.

Bug 16410

Anyone able to reproduce this on Linux-machines?

Can one fix this by letting OOorg generally embed all fonts?

Everyone else has FONT EMBEDDING - and what do these idiots on the Libre Office committee do?

They sit around having "Adgendaless UN-conferences"

And in the wonderful Paris conference - after 20 or so years of STILL NOT HAVING FONT EMBEDDING - they still refuse to put it on the adgenda.

    LibreOffice Conference
    Paris, France
    12th-15th October, 2011

In a nutshell this is the extent of how the lack of font embedding affects people personally and professionally:

    If you create your document on your computer with your fonts from other programs you have bought, obtained from magazine disks, or downloaded for free etc., and what you have on that system is what you have and many other computers, operating systems or people you share, transmit to or do business with - do not have the same font sets you have;

If you use a dual boot system from Linux to Windows or Mac etc - in the transfer from one OS the the other,
    your documents fail.

If you change computer systems - through failure or upgrading and you don't or can't bring the font sets with you - your documents fail.

If you archive them and then bring them back to life on a NEW PC 5 or 10 years later or someone else does on their system - the documents fail.

If you back up all your documents - but not your font sets as well - when the PC dies or gets up graded - your documents fail.

What it means when your documents fail?

When your documents fail it means that the font that you used, with the font sizes, margins, footers and headers, page numbering, titles, the line and character spacing, indexes, footnotes, paragraphs, pages etc., all go go too.

Everything - and I mean EVERYTHING gets fucked up.

This means that THEY have caused YOU to LOSE YOUR WORK.

If you don't have the original font sets - ALL your formatting is GONE.

The Libre Office and Open Office PR spin - they promise one thing and deliver another.

While the software is great and improving - without font embedding and with the NAZI style of enforcement to NOT include it by this committee - Open Office and now Libre Office - these jokers are just playing shell games and bullshitting their way through it and around it.
They are frauds - and the organisations and their secret committee meetings and all the game playing - these people are dishonest - your not allowed to embed your own fonts in your own documents using the OO / LO software, because they say so - only they are just not saying it out in the open.
